Woodland Spirits DVD is a 28-minute film about the art of Ojibwe and Oji-Cree Artists Roy Thomas, Moses Beaver, Andrew Machendagoos and Gelineau Fisher. This DVD shows the connection between three generations of Woodland-style artists to their mentor Roy Thomas and to the cultural heritage of Northwestren Ontario First Nations. Louise Thomas, wife of the late Roy Thomas (1949-2004), introduces viewers to her husband's artwork in the Ahnisnabae Art Gallery. His style of painting was influenced by the traditional stories of the Ojibwe as well as the traditional art images as seen in pictographs. The film explores this connection to the land and the cultural traditions as Moses Beaver visits the camp of Gelineau Fisher where the pairtravels by canoe to view ancient pictographs, In turn the mentorship role of Thomas is carried on by Beaver as he travels with young Andrew Machendagoos to view these pictographs. All men were inspired and influenced by Roy Thomas through his generous spirt of sharing. Throughout the film, the wordsof Roy Thomas are heard as encouragement and teaching for all aspiring artists. This film is a co-production by Thunderstone Pictures and the National Film Board of Canada.
